Civil law
Limitation period (promlčecí lhůta)
The time within which a right must be enforced. After it expires, the debtor can raise limitation and defeat the claim.
The general limitation period for civil claims is three years from when the right could first be exercised, with an objective ceiling of ten years.
Once time-barred, a claim is not automatically void, but the debtor may raise limitation as a defence and the court will then reject the claim.
